Millcreek Valley History
Habitat for Humanity International was founded by Millard and Linda Fuller in 1976. The first Habitat house was built in Americus, Georgia in 1979. By 1984, former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn became Habitat partners and the first Jimmy Carter Work Project was held in New York City. In 1989, Hurricane Hugo strikes and all Habitat houses in South Carolina survive. In 1991, Habitat’s 10,000 house is built as the 15th anniversary is celebrated. Hurricane Andrew strikes in 1992 and all 27 Habitat houses in the Miami, Florida area survive. In 1994, Habitat International is named the 19th largest home builder in the US by Builder magazine. Millard Fuller is named “Builder of the Year” by Professional Builder magazine in recognition of Habitat’s mission of eliminating poverty housing everywhere in the world. In 1996, the 50,000th Habitat home is built and in 2002, the 100,000th home is built.
Millcreek Valley Habitat for Humanity affiliate was founded in 1989, and the first Valley Habitat home was built in Lincoln Heights. By 1994, the 10th home was built including homes in Lockland and Glendale. The first Executive Director was hired in 1995 and the next year the office was moved to the warehouse at 420 West Wyoming in Lockland through the aid of Robert Weatherbie. The locations of Habitat homes was expanded to Hazelwood and Woodlawn and later in 2001 to West College Hill, Loveland and North College Hill.
Millcreek Valley Habitat for Humanity is a Non Profit Public Charity under section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Contributions to Millcreek Valley Habitat for Humanity are tax deductible under section 170 of the Internal Revenue code.
