Miillcreek Presents First Scholarship Award!

Jocyline Wantsala, daughter of Habitat homeowner, Daphne Wantsala located in Woodlawn, will be attending college at Ohio State University this Fall. Jocyline is the first recipient of the Millcreek Valley Habitat Scholarship Award of $500! She graduated from Princeton High School in the Spring and wrote a very compelling essay to receive this award. Here, Jocyline and her mother Daphne are pictured outside their Habitat home which was built by volunteers in 1997 from The Ascension and Holy Trinity Episcopalian Church of Wyoming where the family still attends church. Congratulations, Jocyline from all the volunteers at Millcreek and best wishes to you beginning your college education!
Greenhills Presbyterian Church - Our Faithful Covenant Church Partner
Once again Greenhills Presbyterian Church, under the fine leadership of Ron Jandacek, has devoted one week in June to the building efforts of Millcreek Valley Habitat! We thank them for the 15 years of faithful service to whatever task awaits them. In 2004, the group of volunteers took on the completion of the home of Tracy Able in West College Hill that needed their finishing touches. Tracy’s home was sponsored by Ursuline Academy, Aiken High School, and the law firms of Dinsmore & Shohl and White, Getgey and Meyer. After a delayed bad weather start the sponsors diligently worked on the home until Greenhills Presbyterian took over.
The volunteers from Greenhills also annually support Millcreek through the fundraising efforts of their Spaghetti Supper, held in the Fall of the year at the Church. A Special Thanks to everyone at Greenhills!!!
Dedication ceremonies for this home will be on Saturday, July 24. Please check the web page or call the Habitat office for the time and directions if you would like to attend.
Belize - Tithing Partner of Millcreek Valley Habitat for Humanity
As part of our commitment to the Standards of Excellence under which we operate, Millcreek Valley tithes 10% of their revenue to the Central American country of Belize. Millcreek believes that a sense of global community within Habitat for Humanity is built by the affiliate tithe - the sharing of a portion of our resources with Habitat’s work in another country.
HFH Belize was approved as a partnering country in 1999 and the first affiliate was established in Belize City. Millcreek became a tithing partner shortly thereafter. In consideration of hurricane threats to the region, concrete block is being used in house construction. While it’s difficult to accurately estimate the number of families living in substandard housing, an indication of the housing deficit may be surmised from the government’s pledge to build 10,000 houses over a five-year period! Habitat Belize will be approaching their 20th home in 2004-2005 building season. Much has been accomplished by this small affiliate in a beautiful country!
Community is not necessarily defined by geography. Millcreek is proud to be tithing to Belize. “Awaken our hearts to understand how our neighbors include all of humanity, not just those whose lawns border ours……..” An excerpt from the Habitat special litany of blessing.
Recent Dedications
In February, Valerie Clark and her two sons, Brian and Rico, moved into their new home on Savannah Street in North College Hill. Valerie and her very industrious family will enjoy a beautiful home built entirely by the mighty crew from Westwood United Methodist Church, under the guidance of Duncan Cordrey, Construction Leader, and Rev. Bruce Crane, Project Leader. Millcreek Valley thanks this hard working church in their unselfish efforts for the Clark family!
In April, the dedication of the home for the Dionna Malone family was led by St. James of the Valley Catholic Church. The home in Lincoln Heights was a lengthy project, being the rehabbed structure of the boyhood home of one of Millcreek’s founders, Willis Holloway. The project was started by groups and financial support from the St. Xavier Senior Class who did a lot of the demolition work. The Millcreek Valley Retired Builders worked on the home for approximately 1 1/2 years during the week with St. James and other groups lending building expertise on the weekends. But when it was completed, what a beautiful site! Funding for this home was in part through St. James, the Tough As Nails Golfathon, St. Xavier, and our own Fund for Humanity. Many thanks to all for a job well done!
Counting Her Blessings
Recently, we received this letter from one of our partner families, thankfully letting Millcreek know her heartfelt thoughts as her daughter graduates from high school and makes plans to attend college.
“Dear Millcreek Valley Habitat for Humanity,
As Jocylines’s high school graduation draws near, I can’t help but review my blessings. Living at the same address, being in the same school and having the same friends for six years in a row is record breaking for my kids! I can never thank you enough for the privilege we have as your partner family! “
The Cement Masons Do It Again!
Once again the apprentices of the Cement Masons Local Union # 1, under the guidance of Daryl Thomas, did a magnificent job on the driveway and front sidewalk at the current Ursuline build in West College Hill for partner family, Tracey Able. Thanks and praises for the Cement Masons!!
